    In 2010, it takes courage to for a label to describe a band as being a combination between POISON THE WELL and THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN. This isn’t 2001, when wild comparisons to each group flew around like collapsing dot.com companies. Nearly ten years down, people can read through the bullshit when using these milemarkers. So thankfully, it is safe to say that SOME PEDESTRIANS pass the comparison smell test. The band’s powerful, exotic rhythm section churns, twists, and destroys the lines between hardcore, metal, tech, and so forth. Flashy drumming and winding, tap-dancing guitars serve as the baseline for the lengthy seven songs on Blackbird. Surging momentum generally peaks somewhere on each track, not unlike the way New York’s SKYCAMEFALLING used to pen their songs (especially on the Ferret Records classic 10.21). Things really shine on the final track, “Last Call Out to the Deaf,” which is fueled by guitars sounding like roller coaster carts doing loop-de-loops, and then suddenly breaking into clean passages with haunting whispered vocals and an ultimate, emotional cascade of gang vocals and double-bass demolition (you can readily imagine the singer on his knees, screaming his guts out into a dirty stage floor). Parts of Blackbird feel very late 90s Eulogy Records — RED ROSES FOR A BLUE LADY, KEEPSAKE (before they soured),  NEW DAY RISING… all updated with a modern production feel. The muddy tone of the growled/shouted vocals is disappointing, but it also seems to be part of a conscious choice to have the rhythm section ’speak first’ for the band. If you’re into POISON THE WELL’s material from You Come Before You to points more recent, SOME PEDESTRIANS are well worth checking out. (Pastepunk)
